TV Report: Jamba and Porto Alexandre Mines (1970, RTP)

Documentary on the development of the mining industry in Angola, produced in 1970 by Rádio e Televisão Portuguesa under the Angola 70 series. The richness of Angola’s natural resources and their economic and strategic importance are highlighted. The report begins with the mining complex located in Vila da Jamba and its situation in the mining region in southern and central Angola, and then shows the rail transport of the ore from Jamba and Matala to Porto Alexandre (today Tombwa, Namibe).

Environmental conservation and exploitation of mineral resources in Angola: yet another episode of an “inevitable” conflict

Considering the richness of its soils, the landscape of southern Angola has been populated since colonial times by several mining enterprises and quarrying. This raises several questions regarding the extent to which these developments affect land use by local communities, and what are the medium and long term consequences of this extractive economy, both in environmental and socio-cultural terms. This is the case of the interior basin of Etosha / Okavango, which is located in an area that begins in the extreme southeast of the country, in the province of Cuando Cubango, and enters the provinces of Cunene, Moxico and Lunda-Sul.

Conservação ambiental e exploração de recursos minerais em Angola: mais um episódio de um conflito “inevitável”

Tendo em conta a riqueza dos seus solos, a paisagem do sul de Angola é populada desde os tempos coloniais por vários empreendimentos mineiros e explorações de pedreiras. Neste contexto, pergunta-se até que ponto é que estes empreendimentos afetam o uso da terra por parte das comunidades locais, e quais as consequências a médio e longo prazo desta economia extrativa, tanto em termos ambientais como sócio-culturais. É o caso da bacia interior de Etosha/Okavango, que se situa numa área que começa no extremo sudeste do país, na província do Cuando Cubango, e entra nas províncias do Cunene, Moxico e Lunda-Sul.
